Sign up for the rowing history event of the year!

As HTBS has reported earlier, Marist University in Poughkeepsie, New York, will organise a Rowing History Symposium and Exhibit Opening of Thomas E. Weil Jr. Rowing History Collection on Saturday 15 August.

The event will begin with rowing historian Bill Miller giving a talk, “Great International University Race of 1869”, from 1 to 2 pm in the Student Center. His talk will be followed by a panel discussion from 2:15 to 3:30 pm on the state of rowing history, where the field stands today and where it will hopefully go in the future.

Members of the panel are so far 1972 Olympian and writer Bill Miller and the 1956 Olympic champion Bill Becklean. John F. Ansley, PhD, Director, Archives and Special Collections at Marist University, tells HTBS that Miller and Becklean will be joined by Ed Woodehouse, Harvard oarsman and author of Joe Burk: An American Ideal (2025), and Elizabeth Clarke, who is Marist Research Services Librarian and co-author of The Poughkeepsie Regatta: 1891–1950. Ansley also mentions that Clarke is a key member of the team cataloging Tom Weil’s collection.

Other members of the rowing community might be added to the panel.

After the panel discussion, the attendees will make their way to the James A. Cannavino Library on campus for an exhibit opening and Archives & Special Collections open house, showcasing materials from the Thomas E. Weil Jr. Rowing History Collection.

Light refreshments will be provided.
