We are sad to learn that Adrian Stokes died today, at age 93. Adrian was a regular reader of HTBS and (with the support and assistance of his daughter, Teresa) he was also an occasional contributor, especially commenting on Oxford rowing in the 1950s. This was a time and a place that he was particularly familiar with as he was an innovative President of Oxford University Boat Club in 1952 and rowed in the Boat Races of 1951 and 1952. Previously, he had stroked the very successful New College crew of 1950 which went Head of the River at Oxford and won the Ladies’ Plate at Henley and the Reading Grand. He was part of the Oxford coaching team in 1957, 1958, 1960 and 1961.

He never lost his love of the sport.

A full appreciation of Adrian’s life will follow in due course.
