Rowing the Salad Course

Each fresh leaf
of endive sat,
a little boat, atop
the chopping board,
crisply shaped boats
a rower might select from,
to get the feel of, the fit of.
I looked about for oars,
and decided celery sticks
would suffice.  And the sauted
strips of beef I placed in each boat
aptly represented
ripped rowers.
