On Composing

By Philip Kuepper

Of course, waves and wind
determine what is
to be written.
Some boats move
like a symphony.
Other boats
rock.
There are boats caught up
in the jazz of storms
There are boats calm
as easy listening.
There are boats of opera
that ride the crests,
and then the doldrums,
boats of mood,
either stabbing in the back,
or making love,
or both,
and simultaneously.
There are boats of chamber music
that delight their ways across the water,
these last, the boats I favor.
They play the depths with light.
I like light.
I can see by it.
