Documentary “The Boys of ’36” gets its British Premiere on 12 August.

HTBS editor Göran R Buckhorn writes:

On 14 April, HTBS reported that the one-hour documentary The Boys of ’36, which is based on Daniel James Brown’s book The Boys in the Boat, will premiere on 2 August on the American PBS Channel.

At that time, there was no information when and which channel would broadcast the documentary in the UK. However, HTBS has been in constant contact with American Experience and today our contact person there came back with the good news that The Boys of ’36 will premiere in the UK at 9 p.m. on Friday, 12 August on PBS America (Sky 534, Virgin 276 and Freesat 156).

Executive produced by Mark Samels and produced by Margaret Grossi and Mary Carillo, The Boys of ’36 is the well-known story for the HTBS readers of the nine working-class young men from the University of Washington who surprised USA and the rowing world when they captured the gold medal in the eights at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. These sons of loggers, shipyard workers and farmers overcame tremendous hardships – psychological, physical and economic – to beat not only the Ivy League crews of the East Coast in America but Germany’s elite oarsmen. Their unexpected victory, and the obstacles they overcame to achieve it, gave hope to a nation struggling to emerge from the depths of the Depression.
