5 September 2021
After two days racing, the 2021 European Rowing Under 23 Championships in Kruszwica, Poland, ended today.
Italy, which topped the medal table at the 2020 European Rowing Under 23 Championships, did everything it could to maintain that position, having entered in 16 of the 22 boat classes. However, Romania, second placed on the 2020 medal table, was going to give Italy a run for its money, having entered in 15 classes.
The two nations matched each other at the regatta with four gold medals when Romania took a convincing win in the women’s eight, finishing 10 seconds ahead of Germany. The Romanian crew was stroked by Tokyo Olympian Simona Radis, who had won gold in the single sculls less than two hours earlier.
As HTBS predicted in an article on 3 September, Emil Neykov, of Bulgaria, matched his World Under 23 Champion title with a European gold in Kruszwica. In the women’s double sculls, the Greek crew of Evangelia Anastasiadou and Evangelia Fragkou won the gold medal.
There was a good medal spread at this regatta with 19 out of 30 participating countries taking medals.
