The painted eyes at the prows of dghajsas
are the eyes of Osiris,
eyes that stare down the Evil Eye
of danger, of accident;
eyes of good fortune,
eyes that see beyond time,
to smooth the voyage,
keep calm the seas,
eyes to keep
a lookout for creeping
doom.
