The 1970s: The Decade That Style Forgot

Tim Koch remembers his formative decade.

John Wiggins is a very fortunate man. As we saw in the recent HTBS post, he was in the Oxford crew that won the 1976 Boat Race. Perhaps even more fortuitous, he is in a photograph of a group of young men that was taken in the 1970s that is not horribly embarrassing. There are a few hairstyles that may have dated a little and John looks like he should be in school, not university, but it shows nothing that would cause one to hesitate to put it on the Internet.

The Oxford Crew of 1975, a year before, was not so fortunate. As this picture from Getty Images shows, some bad hair was combined with bad fashion.

Perhaps in 1978, the two Boat Race ‘7’ men had a contest to see who had the worst style.

Still, it could have been worse……..

I am sure your help in encouraging me and improving my HTBS articles such that they are of a good standard must have helped me become a Stewards member without having to wait for X years. Thank you much appreciated. If you are in the UK sometime it would be good to meet. I would treat you to a meal. Do you ever get to the HRR?

Also Chris if you hadn’t told me about the first Friends of Rowing Forum I attended at Henley then it is unlikely that I would have written the Radleys of the Lea and done the things which followed. So no Boat Party this year but a meal on me at a venue suitable to you ?

This is not an understatement but when I read the HRR Stewards LETTER this morning I was gobsmacked etc . I thought I might move up the waiting list a bit due to my health history and age but didn’t think I would go to the top.
