Signs of Spring

Signs of Spring

Through my office window,
I see a sea of magnolia flowers,
Heavily hanging on tree branches.
Through the swaying blossoms I watch,
As rowers from the local high school –
Slender girls and sturdy boys;
And a runt who must be the cox –
Eagerly jogging by, some tramping
Their way to the docks,
Where the shells are waiting,
Like horses impatiently
Waiting for their riders,
To take them out on the blue fields.
The oars, in the hands of youths,
Leaving rings on the river,
That multiply like Odin’s Draupnir.
