National Poetry Month: The Shortcut

April is National Poetry Month here in America. This was inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in 1996. On the Academy’s website it states that ‘National Poetry Month is now held every April, when schools, publishers, libraries, booksellers, and poets throughout the United States band together to celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture. Thousands of organizations participate through readings, festivals, book displays, workshops, and other events.’

Of course, HTBS, with its interest in ‘rowing poetry’, would like to join in, and what is more appropriate than having HTBS’s own poet, Philip Kuepper, to start by posting a newly written poem:

The Shortcut

Through the reflected
web of flights
strung on the river’s surface
by a pair of gulls,
the rower cut,
uncaught.
