Great River, Great Race

3 April 2024

Entries are now open for the 2024 Great River Race which will take place on Saturday, 21 September, when over 200 crews and 1500 people will once again take part in this 21.6 mile marathon from East London to Richmond in South-West London.

A press release from the organisers says:

The Great River Race is an event for traditional and traditional-style boats, powered by a minimum of four oars or paddles. Sliding seats and outriggers, banned for many years, are now allowed. Each boat must be coxed and, in keeping with the Watermen’s role as the taxi drivers of the Thames, must carry a passenger.

Competitors will return from all over the world to take part in this unique event, from young novice scouts to hardened coastal rowing veterans determined to beat their previous records.

Many crews enter in fancy dress to have fun and to enjoy making money for their charities, cheered on by the spectators who watch from London’s famous bridges and landmarks. Last year over 30 charities were supported by crews taking part.
