Isn’t it enough
that I milk the minute
of its seconds?,
milk this very minute,
4:03 A.M., 11/4/2018,
of its seconds,
anchoring it in print
by writing it out in words?
Isn’t it enough
to anchor the unanchorable?
(4 November 2018)

Yes, it is enough. Whatever else it reaches for – art, entertainment, memoir, literature – this also lies at the core of history, and without the building blocks of history to anchor it, history is as faithless and ephemeral as Banquo’s ghost.
Lamartine: The Lake
Thus driven forth forever to new shores,
Born toward Eternal Night and never away,
Sailing the Sea of Ages, can we not
Drop anchor for one day?
….
Or, conversely, to quote Fitzgerald, as opposed to anchoring or pressing on to unfamiliar horizons, “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”
