At the start
the stopwatch
failed. The rowers
shot, full-throttle!,
from the line, their oars
ripping the silk of the river, the fine
smooth sheet of it
a rumpled mess in their wake,
that closed smooth, again,
one they had passed.
They had disturbed the river’s sleep,
the river dreaming beyond time,
where starting and stopping are not.

Interesting photo. I guess it is of a race at the ’48 Olympic Regatta held at Henley but who are the crews?
