International regatta posters are great pieces of graphic art. National, International, FISA and Olympic posters were regularly printed to promote these events. From 1900 to about 1975, regatta posters mostly featured graphic designs. Mid-1970s and onward were mostly designed around photographic images. It’s fun to see how designers imagined many graphic versions of rowing.
Tim Koch published a great piece on HTBS on 21 June 2024 showing Henley Women’s Regatta posters. Let’s look at some of the 20th Century international regatta posters.
Most posters after 1975 were photo compositions. Examples below:
































Thank you for assembling such a remarkable and diverse set of posters from rowing’s history (well, from a range of about 75 years of the 20th Century). It is a joy to see these images.
What is the unusual boat in the foreground of 1956, where the man is rowing from a standing position?
