Just two days ago, William O’Chee received an urgent request from Robin Bourne-Taylor CGC at OUBC to do something for them to use for Remembrance Sunday. Robin came up to Oxford from Abingdon School and rowed in four Oxford Blue Boats (three victories) from 2001 to 2005 before being commissioned into the Life Guards. He won a Distinguished Gallantry Cross for his actions in Afghanistan.
William writes: “I penned a brief verse, The Oarsman’s Ode, which is going to be read for the first time on Sunday morning when the squad assembles for a brief commemorative service before training.”
The Oarsman’s Ode
In the dapple light of morning, they carefree rowed their way,
And firmly smote the surging stream at ending of the day.
Strong of limb, with steady swing the rhythm of the crew,
In friendship forged, and all as one, they vowed they would be true.
They heard their nation beckon, like the coxswain’s clarion call
And answered with their valour, though they themselves might fall.
At sea, on land or in the air, they staunchly passing met;
And with their vivid honour signed the world, lest we forget.
