The water waited
with the weight of its body
to press against the oars
pressing against it.
The rowers waited,
expectant at the start,
school to school,
crew to crew,
to challenge one another,
to will out a win,
not thinking that the water
is always already
the ultimate winner,
just by lying in wait.
