Remarkably, Tim Koch finds something interesting on daytime television.

British readers may be aware of Bargain Hunt, a BBC television daytime programme in which two pairs of contestants are challenged to buy antiques or collectables from shops or fairs and then sell them in an auction for a profit. The show is punctuated by footage of the host visiting a place of historical interest, such as a stately home or museum, and talking about some of the items housed there.

The BBC antiques expert, Eric Knowles, left, with River and Rowing Museum curator, Cate Tren, right.

On the programme that was first broadcast on 13 November, presenter Eric Knowles visited Henley’s River and Rowing Museum and talked to curator, Cate Tren, about the Boat Race and Henley Royal Regatta and the 4-minute clip can be viewed here. In it, Cate accidentally says that the University Boat Race’s co-founder, Charles Wordsworth, was William Wordsworth’s brother. Pedantically, he was the poet’s nephew.

To mark the RRM’s 25 years, 2024 will see “a whole host of celebratory activities”. Keep in the know via X/Twitter @river_rowing. See the 2017 HTBS post on Peter Coni for the background to this particular exhibit.
