9 December 2023

On Wednesday 6 December, the Committee of the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta (HOSR) hosted the last rowing history Zoom event of the year.

The event was called “Builder of Boats and the Boys: A Pocock Legacy” and was honoring boatbuilder George Pocock, whose career and contributions to the sport of rowing helped rowers to reach their protentional. Among those he helped were the now famous 1936 “Boys in the Boat”.

The guests on Wednesday evening were:

Jim Pocock, Jr – Grandnephew of George Pocock (grandson of George’s brother Dick)
Nicole Klein – Coordinator of the Shell House Restoration Project
Steve Chapin – Builder and Restorer of Pocock Racing shells
Judy Rantz Willman – daughter of Joe Rantz, 7 seat in the 1936 Husky crew who won the gold medal in the eights in Berlin
Al Mackenzie – West Coast historian on Pocock boats and rowing memorabilia

This was a brilliant event. For those who missed the event, it is now available on YouTube. Enjoy:
