The sea broke the boat in two,
snapped it like a breadstick,
and swallowed it
to cut its hunger,
waiting for the main
course to be brought,
which proved an elaborate
platter of seaside houses,
nestled in a parsley of trees,
built to appease the sea’s appetite,
or so it appeared,
so close were they to the shore.
