As HTBS wrote in August, Irene Hewlett, librarian at Leander Club in Henley, has organised a series of talks about rowing books and books with rowing. The first talk was on 7 September when Bonnie Garmus presented her best-selling novel Lessons in Chemistry (2022).
At the second talk, on Thursday, 9 November, Gavin Jameison will talk about his Water’s Gleaming Gold: The Story of Hugh ‘Jumbo’ Edwards, which was published in June. Signed copies of Water’s Gleaming Gold will be available to purchase.
The event takes place at 7 p.m., a finger buffet will be served. The talk is open to both non-members and members of Leander. The ticket is £22.50 and can be bought here.
In rowing historian Tom Weil’s review of Jamieson’s book, he wrote:
I heartily recommend Water’s Gleaming Gold, not just to those who enjoy rowing history, or good biography, but also to those who feast upon good writing. Kudos to Gavin Jamieson for this gift bestowed upon us, and may we see more such works flow from his pen in the years to come.

The event is in aid of the Leander Trust, a trust which is a registered charity to advance the education of young people and their physical education by providing facilities to enable and encourage rowing and sculling; and to help by providing facilities for recreation for those who need such facilities because of their youth, social or economic circumstances.
The third talk will be held by Leander’s Andy Trotman, who will talk about Leander’s Bicentenary Book, Leander Club, The First 200 Years, 1818-2018 on 18 January 2024.

I’ve just finished reading Gavin’s wonderful book, which I so enjoyed. It’s an incredible story of determination that Gavin unfolds as a gripping story.
His painstaking research also tells much about Jumbo & Dad’s (Jack Beresford) long relationship & friendship, much of which I didn’t know.
I much regret being unable to attend Gavin’s Leander talk.
