Someone made sure that the monkeys were not fed.

At the World Rowing Masters Regatta at Roodeplaat Dam in Tshwane, South Africa, like any other regatta around the world, big or small, the focus is on the rowers. Seldom do we hear anything about the people, many of them volunteers, who make sure that the regatta on and off the water runs smoothly.

HTBS photographer Marie Barge decided to take some pictures of these “unsung heroes”.

The drivers – here represented by Mr. Phillip Mashigo – daily drove athletes and their entourage back and forth from the Roodeplaat Dam to the different hotels.
The Security
The young people from the Dinokeng project interviewed and collected data on how the event had gone and asked rowers how they enjoyed the regatta. This information will be used for future events in the Dinokeng area. Here a young lady interviews Swedish rower Per Ekström.

The launch drivers – drove regatta officials and umpires along the racecourse under the hot African sun. One of them, Mr. Ray Gray-Wilson, said he was not affected by the heat. Together with his daughter Dominique Gray-Wilson, who worked tirelessly with the media, he was volunteering to make sure the Roodeplaat Dam and the regatta were a success. Mr. Gray-Wilson welcomed the diversity in rowing and was very pleased with the increasing numbers of black South African rowers.
The food vendors – who satisfied the never-ending appetite of the athletes.
