The Kingdom of Sweden is celebrating the Golden Jubilee of Carl XVI Gustaf, 77, who ascended the throne on 15 September 1973, after his grandfather, Gustaf VI Adolf, had died that day, age 90. Carl XVI Gustaf is the first Swedish monarch to celebrate a Golden Jubilee. Carl XVI Gustaf’s father Prince Gustaf Adolf died in an airplane crash at Copenhagen Airport, Denmark, in January 1947 when Carl Gustaf was only 9 months old.
At the celebration this past weekend, King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, could be seen on the Royal Barge Vasaorden, which had gone through a two-year restoration.
