Ship of State

10 December 2017

Democracy is an anchorage
of sweet fluidity,
an anchorage not ice-bound,
but one of water
ever in motion.  When events
seem to become
too conservative, liberalism flows in
to loosen the rigidity
that threatens to impact
the ship.  Congress is
like a team of rowers,
their oars the legislation
they write, and pass into law,
diverse rowers of a single ship
that can only be rowed in one direction
at any given time;
each one a rower of distinct
ability that must find
common rhythm to move the ship
forward, to keep
America afloat, to keep
America anchored in the sweet
fluidity of democracy.
